Xeomin® is a prescription medicine that is injected into muscles, and works very much like Botox®, by temporarily reducing or eliminating muscle contractions in the area.
The difference between Botox vs. Xeomin lies in the type of botulinum toxin used. While there are some differences between the two molecules, both treatments are FDA approved for treatment of frown lines and work by relaxing the treated muscles. Most providers feel the products are equivalent.
Much like Botox®, Xeomin® relies on botulinum toxin to temporarily relax facial muscles by preventing contraction of muscle fibers. Without muscle contraction certain wrinkles, like frown lines and forehead wrinkles, can be significantly reduced, since they are caused by muscle movements, and not just the natural aging of the skin.
At California Skin Institute, our doctors typically complete the procedure in 10-20 minutes, and you are able to continue about your day uninterrupted. We use specialized injection techniques and needles to maximize localization of the injections, to ensure that the right muscles are being temporarily relaxed.
Our skin care specialists also take significant care to ensure that you are left with a natural appearance, rather than the “plastic” look that is often created by inexperienced professionals.
Xeomin’s ability to limit muscle contractions has opened many avenues for the use of this treatment. For example, this injectable has been used to:
The improvements from a typical injection tend to last several months, which of course heavily depends on the patient’s individual chemistry and metabolism rates. However, keep in mind that Xeomin® treatments are likely a better solution for ongoing facial skin treatment.
This is different from dermal fillers like Belotero Balance® or Perlane®, which tend to show more immediate improvements by increasing volume under the skin.
During treatment, your California Skin Institute provider will use a small needle to inject Xeomin® into the treatment area. Typically, several small injections are made, to distribute the treatment more evenly and to achieve improvements that look natural.
California Skin Institute providers use a numbing cream and small needles to ensure that injections are comfortable and virtually painless for our patients.
